Data From the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
A secondary analysis was performed with data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a national probability survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics between January 1, 1988, and December 31, 1994, with oversampling of persons 60 years and older, non-Hispanic black individuals, and Mexican American individuals. Results There were 7186 male and 7902 female adults 20 years and older with available data in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The mean 25(OH)D level in the overall sample was 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L). The 25(OH)D levels were lower in women, elderly persons (60 years), racial/ethnic minorities, and participants with obesity, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. The adjusted prevalence of hypertension (odds ratio [OR], 1.30), diabetes mellitus (OR, 1.98), obesity (OR, 2.29), and high serum triglyceride levels (OR, 1.47) was significantly higher in the first than in the fourth quartile of serum 25(OH)D levels (P<.001 for all).
College Students Face Obesity, High Blood Pressure, Metabolic Syndrome
Obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and inactivity: they're not just your father's problems any more, University of New Hampshire research finds. New data on the widely unstudied demographic of college students indicates that this group of 18 - 24-year-olds are on the path toward chronic health diseases. Although limited, national data suggest the trend is not unique to UNH. The UNH data, collected from more than 800 undergraduates enrolled in a general-education nutrition course, find that at least one-third of UNH students are overweight or obese, 8 percent of men had metabolic syndrome, 60 percent of men had high blood pressure, and more than two-thirds of women are not meeting their nutritional needs for iron, calcium or folate. "They're not as healthy as they think they are," says UNH lecturer Ingrid Lofgren, who is collecting and analyzing the data with her Nutrition in Health & Well Being co-teachers Joanne Burke and Ruth Reilly, both clinical assistant professors, and lecturer Jesse Morrell.
Helena project - Adolescence nutrition program in Europe
HELENA will provide, for the first time in Europe, harmonised and comparable data about food intake among male and female European adolescents, taking advance of computer-based dietary assessment tools. The key to health promotion and disease prevention in the 21st century is to establish an environment that supports positive health behaviour and healthy lifestyle. Most diseases have their origin during childhood and adolescence, but the relationship between the development of non-communicable diseases and the adolescence process is poorly understood. Adolescence is a crucial period in life and implies multiple physiological and psychological changes that affect nutritional needs and habits. The HELENA proposal includes cross-sectional, crossover and pilot community intervention multi-centre studies, as an integrated approach to the above-mentioned problem.
You Can Help Find Out The Actual Number Of Malnourished People ...
BAPEN is undertaking the first prospective national nutrition screening survey across both hospital and community care settings 25 - 27th September 2007 in order to find out the prevalence of malnutrition on admission to hospital and care. This survey is being organised in collaboration with the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and is also supported by the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA). Christine Russell, BAPEN Lead for Nutrition Screening Week says: "Malnutrition is a problem, we read about it in the press, see it in our hospitals, care homes and community, yet the data we have on its prevalence is based on studies undertaken in just a few centres in UK over 10 years ago, which use different criteria to define malnutrition. If we are to seriously tackle this problem we really do need to know exactly how big it is today." Why is such a survey needed? -- The prevalence of malnutrition in UK is based on data collected in studies undertaken over 10 years ago involving a limited number of institutions.
DepEd implements universal medical dental checkup at opening of ...
Tacloban City (May 27) -- The Universal Medical and Dental Check Up among Grades 1 to 3 pupils will be implemented by the Department of Education at the opening of classes in June. This is the assurance given by Education Secretary Jesli Lapus during the recently-held command conference on the smooth opening of classes, presided by no less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. DepEd's Universal Medical/Dental Check Up (UMDC) aims to examine Grades 1-3 pupils to determine their health and nutrition status. Each child is provided a medical and dental card that serves as his/her health record. The health and nutrition data gathered under the UMDC will identify children who are at health-risk, guiding DepEd in planning school feeding programs and other health interventions for the rest of the school year.
